March 16, 2001, Newsletter Issue #11: Best English Grade!

Tip of the Week

Use A Thesaurus

Using the best words is an important part of writing better papers and reports.

Once you have edited your paper for grammar, spelling, and content, look for words that are repetitive or lack sparkle. Look up these words in a thesaurus to find similar words that will add flavor and make your writing demand a good grade. For example, instead of saying something is important, try describing it as essential or weighty. Unusual and colorful wording adds to the meaning of your paper. If your teacher enjoys reading what you wrote, you can be sure you will get a better grade. And you will enjoy the writing process more!
